Black and Brown mothers are disproportionately impacted by preeclampsia and maternal health complications. Systemic disparities in healthcare put their lives at greater risk, leaving many without the advocacy and care they deserve. The BIPOC Birth Equity & Recovery Fund exists to close this gap by providing education, advocacy, and community support to ensure that Black and Brown mothers receive equitable maternal care before, during, and after birth.
In Washington State, Black and Native American women are more likely to experience barriers to receiving prenatal and postpartum care, including long appointment wait times. Nationally, Black women are more likely to develop preeclampsia, leading to severe health risks such as eclampsia, stroke, and organ failure. Even when Black and Brown mothers have the same income, education, and access to healthcare as white mothers, they still experience higher rates of preeclampsia and maternal health complications. This is due to systemic inequities in healthcare, including implicit bias, delayed treatment, and less access to culturally competent care.
Through this program, The Next 9 provides maternal health workshops, advocacy training, and community events to empower Black and Brown mothers with knowledge about their rights, the importance of early detection, and strategies for navigating the healthcare system. We partner with local organizations and maternal health professionals to expand awareness and promote culturally relevant care that prioritizes the well-being of Black and Brown mothers. By addressing both systemic and community-based challenges, we work to ensure that all mothers receive the respectful, informed, and equitable care they deserve.

Preeclampsia is one of the most dangerous pregnancy-related conditions, yet many mothers are discharged without the tools to monitor their health at home.
The Preeclampsia Protection Program is a community-based initiative launching in Washington State to provide life-saving tools and education for mothers at risk of preeclampsia. This program focuses on early detection and self-monitoring, ensuring that mothers have the resources to track their health and recognize warning signs before complications arise.
The program provides necessary self-monitoring tools, including a blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, scale, blood pressure logbook, low-sodium seasonings, and an educational guide on preeclampsia awareness and prevention.
In addition to distributing these resources, the program offers practical guidance on self-advocacy in healthcare settings and connects mothers with critical information to help them navigate their care. By equipping mothers with the necessary tools and knowledge, we empower them to take an active role in their health and well-being.

Every mother’s journey is deeply personal, and for some, it is marked by unexpected complications, profound loss, or the weight of trauma. Healing Her Heartbeat is a maternal mental health program dedicated to helping mothers navigate the emotional toll of preeclampsia, birth trauma, and postpartum challenges. Whether a mother is grieving, adjusting to an unexpected diagnosis, or struggling with anxiety and depression, she deserves compassionate support.
This program provides access to therapy, grief support, and emotional healing resources for mothers in critical moments of their journey. We connect Black and Brown mothers with culturally relevant mental health providers who understand their unique experiences and needs. Through advocacy, community engagement, and direct support, Healing Her Heartbeat prioritizes mental health as a centrifugal part of maternal care. No mother should have to suffer in silence. Her pain is real, her healing matters, and her heartbeat deserves to be strong again.
If you or someone you know needs support, we are here to help.
